]performance s p a c e [

Every Month

First Thursdays

An opportunity for ]performance s p a c e [  Studio and Associate Artists to curate and present performance action, live, time and process based projects.

]performance s p a c e [ is passionate about the need for a place where work can unfold without restraints of duration or space. We are interested in work that critically and physically pushes the boundaries of body and space, simultaneous group action, durational performance, text and tech.

Please see the home page for each months activity or sign up to the mailing list for details.

]performance s a l o n [

This year the initial salons will be opened with a short presentation by a ]performance s p a c e [ Associate Artist and visiting artists followed by Q&A discussions.

]performance s a l o n [  is an opportunity to show documentation, research and critically discuss yours and others practice. A chance to get and give feedback; tackling where your practice is at, where its going and whats going on around you.

This is an open session for anyone to attend - you do not have to be a studio holder. We hope to develop a regular group of attendees and a supportive and critical environment.

MARTIN O'BRIEN - Call for Artists - 3 day workshop with Martin O’Brien

Wednesday 21st - Friday 23rd (to include 24 hour public event 23rd - 24th)

Altered States is a three day immersive workshop allowing artists working with endurance based practices to exist in extremis. The first two days will consist of a disciplined structure of physically demanding tasks and the development of performance work. The workshop will focus on physical endurance by pushing participants to explore the possibility of creating work at the limits of human corporeality in an altered state of consciousness. This will be achieved through a series of exercises that work with the following techniques in relation to the artist’s body:
Physical labour
Intense physical activity
Use of speed/exploitation of time
Physical difficulty/ordeal
Periods of fasting
Periods of sleep deprivation

The third day will be a chance for participants to share work during a 24 hour durational event open to the public (6pm Friday 23rd March - 6pm Saturday 24th March).

Participants will be expected to sleep and eat (meals provided)  at ]performance s p a c e [ for the duration of the workshop.

Dates, times and location:
21st - 24th March 2012
]performance s p a c e [
6 Hamlet Industrial Estate,

TAKE IT LIKE A MAN - jamie lewis hadley & Joeseph Mercier

12-16 March - Open presentation (date TBC)

Following suport from the Jerwood foundations Associate Artist jamie lewis hadley will be developing new work in collaboration with choreographer Joeaspeth Mercier. The artists will install a professional wrestling ring in ]performance s p a c e [  for the week duration. jamie and Joeseph will host an informal disscusion about their project following this intensive research & development period.

Through their respective practices both jamie and Joseph have been investigating contemporary masculinities, questions around the queer body and issues of representation, the ‘real’ and the ‘theatrical’.   They wish to open up a dialogue around these themes, exploring them theoretically and practically.

• ideas of machismo and masculinity in relation to wrestling, fighting, and other competitive interactions

between two male bodies, and the performance of gender (ie. straight acting) within these interactions.

• the performance of pain. • strength in relation to queer bodies.

• interaction of theatricality and ‘real’, choreography and  liveness

Fostering innovative critical discourses and practice-based exchanges and interactions, between performance art makers and audiences;

Documenting, and thus tracing as well as enriching, the contemporary history of performance art practices existing in the city through the annual berlin performance art report.
